Over the weekend, Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump pulled double duty, joining Motion City Soundtrack for seven songs in place of an ill Justin Pierre.
As well as starring on the band’s long-awaited comeback record, Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump performed seven tracks live with Motion City Soundtrack over the weekend.
FOB’s singer/guitarist – along with Ber, and Gully Boys’ Nadi McGill and Kathy Callahan – was recruited last-minute for the band’s guest-filled Minnesota Yacht Club Festival performance on July 19, as frontman Justin Pierre was unfortunately away dealing with some health issues (“my lungs are struggling (asthma, sickness) and I need to avoid doing strenuous things,” he explained in a statement on Instagram).
So, before Fall Out Boy’s own headline set at Harriet Island Regional Park that night, Patrick helped open and close MCS’ set, performing Attractive Today, Perfect Teeth and My Favorite Accident, and then coming back to do When “You’re” Around, L.G. FUAD, Everything Is Alright and The Future Freaks Me Out.

Patrick also makes an appearance Particle Physics – a track from Motion City Soundtrack’s forthcoming album The Same Old Wasted Wonderful World. Speaking to Kerrang! about how it came about, guitarist Joshua Cain explained: “Patrick is one of the earliest people that came to a show of ours as a fan and reached out to us before we ever knew about Fall Out Boy or met the band. That’s where we met. We’ve been friends for a super-long time, but just through the career of our bands, and them being astronomically huge and super busy it gets hard to stay connected in the proper way, unless you’re around each other all the time or on tours together.”
Adding that they recently reconnected properly, Josh continued, “Basically, we had been talking with Patrick about stuff, and I was like, ‘Hey, sometimes we have these songs that I fucking love, and then we can’t land a chorus – can I send you a couple of ideas, and maybe you can come up with something?’ So I sent him a couple of ideas to check out. He did one of them and sent it to me, I was like, ‘Oh, this is fucking cool!’ It’s not actually a song that we have on the record right now but then the next day, Patrick goes, ‘Hey, this was in my head all day, and it feels like a song that you guys would have written, but you just haven’t.’ That’s the way he put it. He sent that song, and he was like, ‘I don’t know, I’m not that great at lyrics.’ But it was great, the lyrics are fucking great. It was what we needed, because a lot of the stuff we had been writing was kind of serious for the record and this is fun.”
“He fucking killed it,” added Justin.
