WATCH NOW: In Conversation With Frank Iero

Our In Conversation series has featured some fantastic artists, including Jonathan Davis of Korn, Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses, Rou Reynolds of Enter Shikari. Now, we've had the pleasure of sitting down with the one and only Frank Iero to talk about his life and career.

In Kerrang!’s Brooklyn, NY, office, a handful of lucky fans came to watch Frank as he discussed his new band the Future Violents, his new album Barriers, his bus accident, his memories of My Chemical Romance, and more, with U.S. Executive Director, Ethan Fixell.

On the topic of his first record, Stomachaches, Frank explained his intentions to keep it private: “Never did I think, ‘I can’t wait for other people to hear these songs and these things that I’m talking about,’ that wasn’t the thing. And even then, I wanted it to be kind of gargled and disguised. I wanted you to feel like you were listening in on this ‘record’ as opposed to listening to it. It was very much like writing in your diary and then eventually showing it to someone that you love. Like writing a letter to your future self kind of thing. But never was it supposed to be a record that was digested by strangers, ever.”

While discussing his album Barriers in April before its release, Frank weighed in on the title, saying, “I think that sometimes, we’re so concerned with protecting ourselves that we build up these obstacles and these barriers that we think are going to keep us safe, but they end up holding us in and not letting us go experience the world and try new things. And because of that we end up missing out on so much. Barriers can keep us in and they can keep us safe, but they also keep us out.”
