Dave Grohl says he "wouldn’t feel comfortable singing a song that Kurt sang", but he still has dreams about Nirvana.
Despite having performed hundreds and hundreds of shows with Foo Fighters since forming the band in 1994, Dave Grohl has revealed that he still has dreams about being onstage with Nirvana.
Though he doesn't tend to play their music all that much anymore – even when practicing at home alone – Dave tells Classic Rock, “I still have dreams that we’re in Nirvana, that we’re still a band.
“I still dream there’s an empty arena waiting for us to play, but I don’t sit down at home and run through Smells Like Teen Spirit by myself. It’s just a reminder that the person who is responsible for those beautiful songs is no longer with us. It’s bittersweet.”

Reflecting on the remaining members' awesome 2018 reunion show at Foos' own Cal Jam fest – featuring Dave and Krist Novoselic, plus Pat Smear, Joan Jett and more – the frontman continues that, “I wouldn’t feel comfortable singing a song that Kurt sang. I feel perfectly at home playing those songs on the drums. And I love playing them with Krist and Pat and another vocalist.”
Speaking about the Cal Jam 2018 reunion to Kerrang!, Dave elaborated on his Nirvana dreams and how “Kurt just appears – like he’s been in hiding”.
“We look at him and go, ‘What the fuck?! Where have you been?’” he said of these visions. “And we’ve got a gig in an hour, and I get this feeling, like, ‘Oh my gosh, I get to play these songs again.’ I have that dream at least once or twice a year, and have done for the past 24 years. Getting up to play those songs is like living in that dream.”
