What happened when Green Day headlined Download Festival 2025
Download gets a big “Heeeeeey oooooh” as Green Day finally make their stunning, powerful, feisty headlining debut.
See Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong join Sex Pistols for Anarchy In The U.K. at Norway fest Tons Of Rock yesterday.
While both bands were at Download Festival earlier this month – just on different days – Green Day and Sex Pistols were able to link up yesterday (June 26) in Norway.
The two punk titans appeared at Oslo’s Tons Of Rock, with frontman Billie Joe Armstrong coming out onstage at the end of Sex Pistols’ set with Frank Carter for closer Anarchy In The U.K.
Of course, former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon has famously – or infamously – been outspoken about Green Day, with Billie Joe telling SPIN (via Far Out) in 1997, “I heard that Johnny Rotten was running around telling people that we’d ripped him off. It’s funny, because if it wasn’t for the Sex Pistols there may not have been Green Day, but if it wasn’t for Green Day, the Sex Pistols wouldn’t have done their big reunion tour. To each his own.”
More recently, in 2018, John told the New York Times: “It is embarrassing, really. How many bands are out there like Green Day now? I look at them, and I just have to laugh. They’re coat hangers, you know. A turgid version of something that doesn’t actually belong to them.”
Anyway, check out fan-footage of Billie Joe’s cameo with Frank and the rest of Sex Pistols – who clearly don’t feel the same way as their ex-vocalist – below:
