Soundgarden’s unreleased final album is “definitely over halfway done”

Matt Cameron has confirmed that Soundgarden’s long-awaited final record – following 2012’s King Animal – is being worked on, but it won’t be released before their Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction this year.

Matt Cameron has offered a promising new update about the final, unreleased Soundgarden album, following long-running disputes with Vicky Cornell on behalf of the estate of Chris Cornell.

In a new interview with Billboard discussing the band’s impending Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction, the drummer confirms that they’re “definitely over halfway done” with the record now, and that “Kim [Thayil] is in the process of finishing his guitar parts; he wants to make sure they get exactly the way he wants them.”

However, it won’t be done in time for the Rock Hall celebration, which is happening on November 8 (their inductor is ‘still being determined’, apparently).

“There’s not a set release date or anything as of yet,” explains Matt of the follow-up to 2012’s King Animal. “There were a couple schools of thought, like, ‘Hey, let’s put out a single.’ I think eventually we decided we want to make sure the whole thing is completed before we start releasing singles. I’m excited for people to hear it.”

He’s also shared that hearing the late, great Chris’ vocals again has brought about “extreme highs and extreme lows” on an emotional level, and that, tragically, “it all comes back to the fact that he’s not with us and he left us in a way that has so many questions. It’s been gut-wrenching but at the same time very empowering.”

That’s a sentiment shared by bassist Ben Shepherd, who in May posted: “To hear, as a fan… and band member, a song or two Chris brought in a few years ago turn before my very ears and finger blisters into a full-blown Soundgarden tune is like feeling a glacier fall away off your chest.

“We all have a lot of work to go through in this life… but we are all to a man trying our best and to do each and every one of us proud, you Chris, are right here with us. We all miss you brother, see you when we do.”
