Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil has announced a new memoir, A Screaming Life.

Arriving in May 2026 via HarperCollins, the guitarist reveals he’s spent “the past few years” working on the book, and in it he tells his own life story of growing up in Chicago before heading over to Seattle with Hiro Yamamoto, and of course helping to form the almighty Soundgarden.

A description of A Screaming Life – which has the tagline Into The Superunknown With Soundgarden And Beyond – on HarperCollins reads: “From Soundgarden’s humble beginnings manifesting grunge in Seattle’s beer-soaked punk clubs to their revered status today as rock icons, the band’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. In A Screaming Life, founding member and guitar god Kim Thayil goes backstage to introduce the band that fearlessly pushed the boundaries of rock, invented a new genre and amassed fervent fans from every corner of the world.”

We will learn about how the quartet “faced the triumphs and challenges on the road to their meteoric rise”, as well as the fact that “Soundgarden was shaped by the diverse backgrounds of its creators: Thayil’s Indian heritage and founding bassist Hiro Yamamoto’s Japanese background added unique dimensions to the band’s identity, influencing not only their music but also their experiences in the industry.”

This memoir news of course comes right before Soundgarden’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, which takes place on November 8 at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater. There’s also been talk in recent months of the final, unreleased Soundgarden album. In September, drummer Matt Cameron said that there wasn’t a release date for it just yet, but they’re “definitely over halfway done”, and that Kim was “in the process of finishing his guitar parts; he wants to make sure they get exactly the way he wants them.”
