Back in October, Scowl released the first new music of their new era, the brilliant Special. Now, the California hardcore outfit have released the follow up, Not Hell, Not Heaven, and announced that their long-awaited new album, Are We All Angels, is coming on April 4.

Explaining the song – a full-throttle, fuzzy punk banger – singer Kat Moss says that, “It’s about feeling victimised and being a victim, but not wanting to identify with being a victim. It’s trying to find grace in the fact that I have my power. I live in my reality. You have to deal with whatever you're dealing with, and it ain’t working for me.”

The album, the band's first for new label Dead Oceans, home to Phoebe Bridgers among others, represents even more growth for the band,

“The majority of us were really not proficient musicians when this band started,” says Kat. “It was very Germs-esque in that way, like baby’s first hardcore band, which is awesome. But now, we still might not know what we’re doing, but we have a better idea of what we want to do.”

“The song writing on the new record was the most collaborative to date in Scowl’s history," adds bassist Bailey Lupo. “Everyone brought so many ideas to the table and we were able to dissect it all and take our time. We all have such eclectic tastes, influences and personalities and you can really hear that in every corner on this album.”

Previously, Kat told Kerrang! that the new record had what she referred to as “a whole 'big rock' side.”

“I keep laughing at that, because it sounds like arena rock, but that wasn't what we went in to do,” she revealed. “It's just a happy accident. I think that's a really good thing to have happened for us: to come out with something that feels like it could smash in a large room. That’s a dream come true.”
