Pearl Jam Release Retrograde Video Featuring Greta Thunberg

Pearl Jam are honouring the subject of Gigaton track Retrograde with a powerful new video, directed by Australian filmmaker Josh Wakely and featuring climate change activist Greta Thunberg.

The animated clip not only features some fantastic Pearl Jam Easter eggs (as well as the band members as Tarot cards), it also carries an incredibly important message about our planet, with Greta starring as a fortune teller.

“She never had to act a frame, but she provided that emotion I was looking for,” Josh tells Variety, explaining that he used pre-existing footage of Greta on another actresses' body to make it all remotely come together. “It was a huge thrill to see an email in my inbox from her saying that she loved it.”

Adding how he brought Retrograde to life with the world shutting down due to coronavirus, he said, “Several times, I wondered if I’d have to call the band and tell them I couldn’t do it. I would walk into my basement studio at 8am and leave at 2am, with Zoom running pretty much the entire time. But it was an amazing team effort. And it remains pretty definitively the vision I set out in the script long before COVID was a word I understood.”

Pearl Jam were recently forced to postpone their 2020 European tour, with the cancellation of this summer's BST Hyde Park in London also announced.

"In light of the global COVID-19 pandemic, Pearl Jam's 2020 European tour dates have been postponed until June/July 2021," they said. "We are working with all of our partners to reschedule these dates and will release the new tour routing as soon as we are able.

"All tickets will be honoured for the rescheduled concert dates. Refunds are not being offered at this time. However, we are still reviewing specific ticketing policies with our partners in each country. Ticket holders will be notified of any changes."

The band added: "We look forward to returning to Europe in 2021!"
