Rod Smallwood on the “selfish few” breaking Maiden’s no-phones request: “I wish you nothing but a very sore arm!”

Now the tour has officially kicked off, Iron Maiden manager Rod Smallwood has shared an update about how the band’s no-phones plea has gone down so far.

Before the Run For Your Lives World Tour got going, Rod issued a statement on May 20 asking gig-goers to “severely limit” how much they were taking photos and videos of the show, because “the phone obsession has now got so out of hand that it has become unnecessarily distracting especially to the band”.

With a few European dates now under their belts, he has thanked those who have respected Maiden’s wishes, enthusing that it was “a great boost for us and the band appreciated it greatly” because “is so much better when they can see you unencumbered and that drives them on without that distraction”.

However, he adds that there were a “selfish few” who seemingly did excessively have their phones up, to which Rod wishes them “nothing but a very sore arm!”

He adds, “But they were few, and we do hope this support from fans, especially in the floor area in front of the sound desk, continues in Prague tomorrow and beyond. As I said before, by all means take the odd quick pic as a memento of a great night, but otherwise please keep your phone in your pocket.”

In the same statement, Rod thanked fans for the “amazing welcome” they’ve given new touring drummer Simon Dawson, who “felt your support from the start – and asks me to thank you all”.
