Carlie Hanson has paid tribute to the late Layne Staley with a beautiful new cover of Nutshell.

The alt.pop artist has shared her rendition of Alice In Chains’ 1994 Jar Of Flies classic to mark the 22nd anniversary of the frontman’s death (as well as the 30th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s), and Carlie reveals that this cover has even been approved by Layne’s mother.

Taking to Instagram to tease the song ahead of its release today (April 5), Carlie explained: “Thanks to my momma Jean and my big sis Cass… I grew up listening to alllll kinds of sick ass music. Grunge was something we all loved. I remember them blasting Alice In Chains on long drives when I was like 10 probably, but not up until recently did I fall down a rabbit-hole of everything they have out there.

“Their MTV Unplugged stunned me. I was so blown away and inspired by their performance that I decided to cover Nutshell… It will come out on April 5th in remembrance of Layne and Kurt. Thank you to @primarywave and Layne’s sweet momma for allowing this to happen. I’m excited for you guys to hear my lil version. Love you.”
