You Me At Six's New Album Is Their Heaviest Since Sinners Never Sleep

Following the release of Australian bushfire relief charity single Our House (The Mess We Made) last week, You Me At Six's Josh Franceschi has discussed the track in relation to a potential upcoming album, and if the musical stylings of Our House could work their way into more new music from the band.

While You Me's new standalone single adopts a more uplifting tone despite its lyrical warning about climate change ("It’s slapstick a little bit; it’s a dance song, but the mood of the lyrics and what is being said isn’t so much…" the frontman explains), it sounds as though album number seven from the Surrey crew won't follow suit in the slightest; in fact, at this point it shares more in common with their third LP, 2011's Sinners Never Sleep.

“This record is probably the heaviest we’ve been since Sinners – the stuff that’s been put together is the rockiest record we’ve had in a long, long time," Josh tells Kerrang! in this week's issue of the magazine. "So Our House actually couldn’t be further away from it. That, again, is why it’s a standalone single and why we’re using it in the way we are, because it just wouldn’t work with all the other stuff. When [the record’s] right, it will come out, basically. We’re still working towards that. But everything feels good in the camp!”

When asked if the band are hoping to have new music out before the end of the year, Josh replies, “One hundred per cent. We probably would have had music out in the spring anyway in terms of songs, without Our House. There is stuff that feels ready and there is stuff that feels right. I don’t know if we’ve finished the record yet. I don’t feel like we have. There’s still that elusive thing that people in bands are in pursuit of, which is their masterpiece. You sometimes don’t know if you’ve made it or not until years down the line someone goes, ‘Yeah, that was great.’ Or not just one person but a whole massive society goes, ‘That was fucking amazing,’ and it’s lauded over for years and years. But I don’t feel like we’ve done that. None of us feel like we have. So I think we’re still in pursuit of trying to attain that.”
