Here's a concert you don't get to see everyday....
When South African jazz bassist Musa Manzini was diagnosed with a brain tumor, doctors informed him that they would have to surgically remove it. They also requested that he play his acoustic guitar throughout the entire procedure.
As The New York Times reports, such an "awake craniotomy" allows surgeons to detect any potential problems with the areas in which they are probing. Should Manzini play a wrong note or appear to lose track of the song, his doctors would know to stop immediately. Talk about a real-life game of Operation...
The procedure is apparently quite common these days, but the short clip of Manzini playing guitar with his skull wide open is nonetheless incredible to watch. Check it out below:
The good news is that Dr. Basil Enicker -- a specialist neurosurgeon in charge of the operation at Durban's Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital -- believes that he and his team successfully removed about 90 percent of the tumor. Manzini is now at home recovering.
We're hoping that Manzini feels better soon, so that he can get back to back to ripping killer slap bass tracks like this one as quickly as possible:
