We’ve already told you a whole bunch of reasons why Speed are
awesome… and their latest single THE FIRST TEST is yet more proof.
The hardcore heroes have just unveiled another new song from
their upcoming debut album ONLY ONE MODE – which is due out on July 12 via
Flatspot Records and Last Ride Records – and it not only lyrically reflects Jem Siow’s Asian-Australian experiences, it also features the
frontman playing the flute!
Recently speaking to Kerrang! about his heritage (as well as his brother Aaron, and their bandmate Dennis Vichidvongsa) and sending out
important messages of inclusivity, Jem explained, “I remember talking to my dad when
I was 15 about what I wanted to do with my life. He said, ‘I could tell you to
go do your math homework, but I want you to go write some riffs.’ That
open-mindedness is why I’m in a hardcore band at 31 rather than being an
accountant!
“Most of my Asian counterparts have
a very different experience. We want to pay our privilege forward to open the
gates into this scene. Every person has a unique story to tell, and hardcore
can be a lot more special if more people feel empowered to get involved.”
