The big review: Good Things Festival 2024
Sydney gets rocked as Korn, Loathe, Sleeping With Sirens and more take a noisy pre-Christmas trip down under…
A recent post by Mastodon's Brent Hinds suggests he and High On Fire's Matt Pike have something new in the works.
From Prophets of Rage to The Damned Things, there are plenty of excellent supergroups in the rock world. It’s always exciting to hear about musicians from different artists joining forces to create something new together -- and today, that news comes from Brent Hinds of Mastodon and Matt Pike of High on Fire, who are working on new music together.
Hinds posted a photo to Instagram of him and Matt holding a guitar and a ukulele respectively, and hinted that they’re writing a song together.
“Me and Pike are cook-in up something special for all you guys!” the caption reads. “Stay tuned for more photos, videos&tunes”

This isn’t the first supergroup Brent has been a part of. When he’s not playing guitar in Mastodon, he’s also a part of Giraffe Tongue Orchestra. But Brent is going to be busy with the packed year Mastodon has ahead of them, as the stoner metal legends are currently working on the follow-up to 2017’s Emperor Of Sand.
“We’re constantly creating,” said vocalist and bassist Troy Sanders. “When we’re out on tour, we’re always coming up with lyrics, riffs or half-songs on voice notes and the Pro Tools rig we take out with us.”
And it seems like that method has led to quite a lot of material for Mastodon.
“We’re kind of chomping at the bit to get in there and put together some of the ideas that have been swirling around,” drummer and vocalist Brann Dailor said. “There’s lots of riffs; there’s lots of material. There’s too much material, so we need to get in there and start chipping away at that giant hunk of granite and hopefully produce a beautiful sculpture for all to see.”
Mastodon will also be playing Download Festival this year, along with Kiss, Iron Maiden, System of the Down, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, BABYMETAL, Black Veil Brides, Motionless In White, and many others.
