Karen Dió’s been warming up ten of thousands of rowdy fans a night opening for Limp Bizkit on their Loserville tour. We caught up with the self-professed Latin riot grrrl between shows to ask some thought-provoking questions – like what she’d name her fictional pub…

1. What’s the best thing you know how to cook?

“Traditional Brazilian rice and beans. Matt [Bigland, Dinosaur Pile-Up frontman and Karen’s husband] is the chef at home. I can do Brazilian chocolate cake as well!”

2. What’s the best movie ever made?

“We literally just watched Inglourious Basterds a few days ago, and I was like, ‘Yeah, this movie is fucking amazing.’”

3. Who is your non-musical hero?

“It’s kind of musical too, but my husband. I just love him. He's amazing, and he'd been through so much, but he's still such a positive person.”

4. Dogs or cats?

“Both! I love them so much. I wish I had dogs and cats but right now I just have cats because of my lifestyle – it’s just easier to have cats.”

5. What is your biggest fear?

“Ghosts, which is silly, but they’re terrifying. I’m like, ‘Just don’t come and talk to me or leave me any messages!’"

6. What were you like in school?

“I was kind of friends with everybody – I got along with the popular people but also the nerds. I wasn’t a rebel or anything, I was very chill to be honest. I just wanted to get out because it was boring as fuck!”

7. What’s your favourite city?

“I love where I came from, which is Santos in Brazil. I wasn't born there, but I was basically raised there. It was where I made my whole teenage memories.”

8. Would you rather fly or drive?

“Drive. I’m terrified of flying.”

9. What was your first job?

“I was 15 years old and my grandparents had a store selling cleaning products. I helped them sell things and I’d be on the phone getting the order from suppliers.”

10. What is the best riff of all time?

“I love the riff at the beginning of Sum 41’s The Hell Song. That’s definitely one of my favourites.”

11. Are you a sports person?

“I did so many sports when I was young. I was a gymnast, I played table tennis. I don’t pay much attention to sports anymore – I only really watch the World Cup and the Olympics.”

12. Beach holiday or city break?

“Beach holiday. I need one…”

13. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

“When I was in Brazil, I opened to this amazing artist called Pitty with my previous band. Before the show, I was probably in my head, worrying about little things and my drummer at the time came to me and said, ‘Are you paying attention to what's happening right now? We are here opening for Pitty!’ It was a great eye opener and reminder to live in the moment, because sometimes we can quite easily forget and take it for granted for this moment when it's happening.”

14. What’s your least favourite food?

“Those yellow melons. They’re all so tasteless and boring.”

15. If you had a pub, what would you name it?

“The Karen-oke Pub. You can sing, you can have your beer or your cocktails, but the main thing would be the karaoke. I love karaoke.”

16. What’s your favourite guitar?

“The Gibson SG. I like the [Les Paul] Junior but when I played the SG, I knew it was the right fit.”

17. What’s your favourite TV show?

“Right now, it’s Severance.”

18. What’s the worst fashion decision you’ve made?

“I bought some amazing sunflower trousers once, and I thought they were really cool, but they didn’t match with my vibe, unfortunately.”

19. What’s the stupidest injury you’ve ever sustained?

“I have back problems and I was going to grab my backpack and something happened in my back – I just fell on the floor. That was the most stupid thing, just trying to lift my luggage. I had to lie down for two days straight after, just because I tried to get my luggage, which was ridiculous.”

20. What’s the one thing you wish you could do?

“I wish I could speak more languages. I wish I had time to learn more and speak more German and French, speak Spanish properly, because it’s quite similar to Portuguese.”
