Album review: Deafheaven – Lonely People With Power
Take the power back: Deafheaven return with unexpectedly heavy and entirely expectedly brilliant sixth album.
November’s festival of heaviness and extremity, Damnation, just got even louder – and there’s “so much more to come” to the Manchester bash.
The 20th birthday edition of Damnation Festival is already looking fabulous, with Deafheaven, High On Fire, Perturbator, Pig Destroyer and a whole load more bringing the noise to Manchester's Bowlers Exhibition Centre on November 8 – 9. They've even got UKHC legends Stampin' Ground to reunite and rip through their Carved From Empty Words album, and a special set by returning Swedish thrash heroes The Haunted.
But, they've decided, all this isn't enough, so they've added even more bands. Joining the party will be Swedish death metal troupe Orbit Culture (last seen out with Bullet For My Valentine and Trivium on The Poisoned Ascendancy Tour), Canadian black metallers Panzerfaust, sludgy Americans Oryx, and a special set from Swedish post-rockers EF, playing their Give Me Beauty… Or Give Me Death! album in its entirety.
"It is with great enthusiasm that we head to Manchester with all guns fixed on Damnation Festival!" say Panzerfaust. “We will be firing on every imaginable cylinder, so prepare for the nuclear winter to follow!"
“We’re extremely thrilled to be a part of this massive Damnation Festival line-up," add EF. "A very rare occasion to see us perform our debut album Give Me Beauty... Or Give Me Death! from start to finish – an album that celebrates its 20th anniversary, just as Damnation is!”
Organiser Gavin McInally is, as ever, jazzed about the latest announcement, and promises even more treats yet to come.
“Following their last sold-out UK tour and impressive performances in arenas earlier this year, we’re delighted to welcome Orbit Culture to Damnation for the first time as they continue their rise to the top of the melo-death pile.
“Panzerfaust are one of black metal’s hottest properties with a live show to do the hype justice, so we’re chuffed to have been able to tempt them across the Atlantic for this showing.
“Denver’s Oryx may not yet be a household name on these shores but if you like your doom and sludge heavier than a death in the family, then get their Primordial Sky record on repeat as it’s something quite special.
“And finally, the sublime Ef round off this wave of additions not only with their stunning take on post-rock, but with a 20th anniversary of their debut record, which transports you a million miles from a Manchester industrial estate.
“There’s so much more to come. If you haven’t taken the leap of faith yet, now is the time with more than half of our ticket allocation gone and 20 bands, including headliners to be announced.”
