Thrash metal icon Dave Mustaine announced to the world that he'd been diagnosed with throat cancer only days ago, but he’s already back in action. Megadeth have announced that Dave has returned to the studio, working on the follow-up to 2016’s Dystopia.

"@davemustaine working on mega album 16 like a true warrior,” Megadeth drummer Dirk Verbeuren wrote on Instagram. “Let's keep Dave and his family in our thoughts."

Dave showed confidence and bravery in his initial post about his diagnosis, writing that his doctors have “mapped out a treatment plan which they feel has a 90% success rate,” and that the process has already begun. This studio update confirms that the man behind one of thrash metal’s pioneers is determined to push onward with his endeavors.

Kerrang! continues to send their love and support to Dave and his family, friends, bandmates, and fans.

When Kerrang! sat down with Dave Mustaine to talk about Megadeth’s history and how he survived the metal lifestyle for so long, he admitted to getting nostalgic over the band’s past.

“I do get nostalgic! I wax nostalgic all the time,” he exclaimed. “There’s all this crazy talk on the internet about [Serbian-American inventor] Nikola Tesla being a time-traveller, which I find fascinating. I don’t believe it -- but boy if I did, I’d be the first in line to just watch what we did!

“My favourite period besides now was the [1990] Rust In Peace line-up.” he reminisced. “Nick and David were peas and carrots. Then there was Marty [Friedman, guitar], who’s a very peculiar guy because of being a guitar wunderkind. He spent a lot of time playing, and not a lot of time hanging out with us playing grab-ass and saying stupid shit. That, to me, was also the biggest we ever were.”
