Album Review: Blood Incantation – Hidden History Of The Human Race

Ever wondered what it would sound like if a band were to take loads of psychedelics and then write a death metal album? Wonder no more, because brutal Denver quartet Blood Incantation have done just that. Hidden History Of The Human Race is the follow-up to their 2016 debut Starspawn, and is every bit as bonkers. Slave Species Of The Gods hooks straight in with a bouncy, squealing riff, accompanied by Jeff Barrett’s distinctive fretless bass. Demilich vocalist Antti Boman lays down some guttural guest vocals and, when juxtaposed with the more ambient moments, it all makes for a truly mind-bending experience. Especially when you notice Isaac Faulk’s blastbeats are almost constant throughout. Surprisingly for something so heavy, it’s mostly fun, and there are enough swampy death metal moments to prevent it from ever flying off completely into the cosmos. Mad? Yes, but Blood Incantation have created a contender for death metal album of the year here.
