Zack de la Rocha is, and stick with us here, the best history teacher in the world. In just three albums (and a covers collection), Rage Against The Machine not only indelibly stamped themselves onto the music world – nu-metal might not have happened how it did without them – but taught a shitload of music fans about a lot of stuff that simply doesn’t come up on your school history curriculum. There is a generation of rock fans who know a surprising amount about the civil rights movement, the Vietnamese government, U.S. foreign policy and propaganda techniques thanks to poring over Rage’s CD booklets and doing very slow, pre-Wikipedia internet research to fill in the gaps.
