Motion City Soundtrack Hint At… Something

It seems that Motion City Soundtrack are up to something. What that might be we don’t really now, but the Minneapolis band have posted a cryptic video on their Twitter. It’s a 56 second-long clip of slowed-down live footage, with a portion of Together We’ll Ring In The New Year, from 2005’s Commit This To Memory, playing. All the tweet itself says is: “12.31.19”

Which – obviously – suggests that something involving the band will be happening on New Year’s Eve this year. Are they getting back together? Have they recorded a new album? Are they just trolling us? We wish we knew. And we also hope we won’t have to wait some six months to find out.

The emotionally-charged pop-rockers announced their break-up in March of 2016, putting end to a career that spanned almost 20 years and produced six full-length albums, including 2007’s Even If It Kills Me, which got to number 16 on the Billboard Charts, and 2010’s first (and so far only) major label release, My Dinosaur Life. Produced, like the band’s second record, 2005’s Commit This To Memory, by Mark Hoppus, My Dinosaur Life managed to get to number 15 on the Billboard Charts.

After that, the band record two more albums -- 2012’s Go and 2015’s Panic Stations -- before calling it a day. Frontman Justin Courtney Pierre released a solo record, In The Drink, in 2018, and limited edition four-track EP, Open Mic At The Lo-Fi, which came out on Record Store Day earlier this year.

Who knows what the future holds, but it’s looking like the future is holding something. So while we dream about what that might be, let’s kick back and listen to one of the feel-good anthems of 2010 – NINE YEARS AGO!!! – and remember what life was like all those years ago. Roll on new year’s eve…
