Did You Spot This Gerard Way Easter Egg In The Umbrella Academy?

Last Friday, Netflix's adaptation of Gerard Way's The Umbrella Academy comic-book series finally hit our screens.

We binged the lot in one go and learned a hell of a lot – but we're clearly not as eagle-eyed as the people of Reddit, who spotted some sweet easter eggs throughout the series.

Most notably, in the first episode of the show, The Umbrella Academy's creator Gerard is featured on the back of Vayna Hargreeves' autobiography, and there's even a little made-up quote from the man himself about it.

The copy reads as follows:

Vanya Hargreeves is well known for her virtuosic skills as a violinist. Less understood is the role she played as one of Reginald Hargreeves' adopted children, standing alongside – but never counted among – the famous Umbrella Academy super kids. This is her story, in her own words.

"An incredible read… A revealing portal into the amazing life of Vanya Hargreeves and the life she has lived. I couldn't put it down!" – Gerard Way

How cool is that?!

At The Umbrella Academy's black carpet premiere in Hollywood last week, Gerard chatted about the message of his whole entire story.

The musician and writer told Variety that its message was that “we’re all screwed up and that we’ll have an easier time if we do this together.”

“I was reading a lot of things, like Grant Morrison comics and Grant Morrison’s Doom Patrol and Mike Mignola’s Hellboy and I wanted to make a postmodern superhero story,” Gerard explained of his inspiration behind it. “And then I wrote down all of these things I was interested in and tried to make characters based on them.”
